![]() In three years of Garmin ownership, she admitted that she had never seen a decent map with road names on her Garmin! Whilst there, she intended to explore unknown countryside and hills. I recently helped out one Dittons Velo rider to install a map on her Garmin 810 before a trip to Mallorca. This applies to the Garmin Edge 520/705/800/810 GPS devices let it load up then click the bit where u see your map in the pic top left.Maximise the functionality of your Garmin for navigation 2 ways to do this are plug your maps in to the mem card slot on your pc, or plug your gps into your pc when you have base camp running. you can see your maps of scotland with it. Most alarming! especially in the mist, fortunately we were up in goodish visibility.įree software. On Saturday on Beinn Dearg (Blair Atholl) I noticed that the path near the top had moved! I'm at work and am not that great with modern tech, but fortunately my wife is. We did discover by going on the Garmin website that the card that goes in the gps isn't compatible with your pc. It was actually my christmas pressie, and I am only just getting the hang of it. I have the Dakota 20 and got the os maps for Scotland from Wiggle at half price. And I'll check what's in OSM vs new paths I may do, and amend/update if needed. In the meantime I'll continue to download the maps to my GPS each month or so, to ensure I've got something as up todate as possible. With OSM you will get more accurate paths, and over time hopefully more complete than you'd get from OS - if more people contribute. It would be great if all the "missing" and wrong paths got put onto OSM. I find it reasonably common that the less used paths differ from what you find on an OS map and there's a lot of paths that exist that just aren't on the OS maps. It's maybe something that the members or Paul Webster from this site could help fill in the "missing" paths in some of the more remote areas. I take it you'd only amend a route which has a fairy established path for others to follow or changed in some way due to a necessary detour or shortcut. Hadn't really thought about submitting updates from my own GPS. Can't say the OS maps for those areas are that great either!īrpro26 wrote:Thanks for that update on the maps info Snoopy. Every New Year when I go up I'm adding new ones, same for Sutherland and Wester Ross - back there in October. I'm suprised with the popularity of the Gorm park that it isn't that well mapped out yet. Most popular areas are already mapped out fairly well, but there's only a small percentage of paths in the highlands done. A week later I get the latest map from Talkytoaster and my new/amended path is included! It's great. ![]() If I do a new walk and find the paths aren't on the OSM map or are way off, I usualy go onto OpenStreetMaps web site and add/amend the path as logged on my GPS. The chap says he's constantly updating the info on the maps, I'd like to know what and where he gets the info from and what the changes are.just because I'm a nosey parker!!! Anyone aware of other formats being regularly built?Īnyway - anybody else been using these maps, or already contributing to OSM? The OSM maps can be built into any format, but I'm only aware of offering pre built maps for GARMIN devices. If more people contribute and update the OSM maps then eventually the OSM map data will cover more than what the Garmin maps offer. Although the OSM map does not have as many paths/tracks as the official Garmin maps, I have found a number of times the OSM paths to be more accurate, or for OSM to show a path when there's nothing listed on the Garmin maps (when there should be). The Dakota supports multiple maps so I also have Garmin's GB Topo Maps & GB Discoverer National Parks (50k) SD card. Routable GB map with contours - that's what I've been using. In the UK Martin Overton takes latest OSM map data every two weeks and creates various Garmin compatible maps e.g. But after entering half a dozen paths I did get the hang of it. I found it took a couple of attempts of creating paths before I really understood how to use it. ![]() Simply upload a GPS track log of your walk (must be auto time stamped), and trace over your walk listing it as a path/bridleway listing Sac_scale, and any other data you want to enter. People are encouraged to create an account and update the maps.
